Castle Drogo
Castle Drogo was the 'last castle to be built in England', and is perched high above the Teign Gorge with dramatic views over Dartmoor. It was actually the 20th century home of self made millionaire Julius Drewe, and contains family keepsakes, dolls houses and books and modern technology such as gramophones and radios, set alongside 17th century tapestries and inlaid tables.
The beautiful formal garden makes a striking contrast to Dartmoors ancient woodlands, which creep right up to the borders of the grounds.
Play a family game of croquet on the huge circular lawn, while younger children enjoy the play area nearby, then explore the estate and hike down through the wooded Teign Gorge to the rushing river far below.
Castle Drogo is one of the most remarkable works of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.
There are family activities every day of school holiday, and facilities include a shop, plant sales, cafe and toilets.
