Kinloch Castle, Rum

An example of faded Edwardian grandeur, Kinloch Castle is a unique building that contains the relics of some of the most advanced home comforts of the time! These include features such as air conditioning in the billiard room, and the Orchestrion - an organ and variety of other instruments driven by electric motor that plays perforated card rolls.
Construction started in 1897 and took three years, employing upwards of 300 craftsmen. Kinloch Castle was the first private residence in Scotland to have electricity, with a dam constructed on the Coire Dhu burn for hydro generation.
Hostel style accommodation is available at the castle, although some rooms have four poster beds. It is all very faded grandeur but warm and comfortable and the warden's wife is an excellent cook! There are usually guided tours of Kinloch Castle every afternoon.
