Portree, the Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is often the first port of call on a tour of the Western Isles, due to its proximity to the mainland and lure of dramatic scenery and coastline. Most visitors reach Skye via the Kyle of Lochalsh, which is linked to Inverness by train and to the eastern tip of the island by the Skye Bridge. An alternative route is by ferry from Mallaig.
Skye's most popular destination is the Cuillin ridge, whose jagged peaks dominate the island during clear weather. More easily accessible and equally dramatic in their own way are the rock formations of the Trotternish peninsula in the north, from where there are inspirational views to the Western Isles.
With pastel coloured cottages set round its natural harbour, Portree is a charming place to visit and a useful base to explore from. It's the main town on Skye with an excellent range of shops and leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, pony-trekking and boat cruises.
Portree also provides a cultural focus for the island, with the Aros Centre at the south end of the town staging a programme of concerts, theatre and cinema, an exhibition about the environment of Skye and Lochalsh and an RSPB exhibit with sea eagle nest cameras.
