Inverness

Inverness is the only city in the Highland region, and although relatively small with a population of around 100 000, is a busy and prosperous hub. It's a good base from which to explore the lure of the nearby sea and mountains, and has some interesting attractions of its own.

Inverness Castle
The red sandstone Inverness Castle perched above the river houses the Castle Garrison Encounter - a noisy and entertaining interactive exhibition in which the visitor plays the role of a new recruit in the 18th century Hanoveriam army. At around 7pm during the summer, a lone piper clad in full Highland garb performs for tourists on the castle esplanade.

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery gives a good overview of the development of the Highlands, with informative sections on geology, geography and history on the ground floor, while upstairs you'll find a selection of silver, taxidermy, weapons and bagpipes, and an art gellery that can attract decent touring exhibitions. The Kiltmaker Centre
This small but imaginative visitor centre displays outfits worn by actors for the Braveheart and Rob Roy blockbusters, and sets out everything you ever wanted to know about tartan.

Eden Court Theatre and Cinema
A multi-arts centre, featuring plays, music, exhibitions and a cafe/restaurant.

Fort George
Why not visit nearby Fort George, a time capsule in the life of the ordinary Scottish soldier over 200 years ago.
