The Cairngorms

The huge, mountainous and sparsely inhabited region of Scotland known as the Cairngorms, rises to 1,309 metres (4,296 ft) above sea level and is the highest landmass in Britain. Sub-arctic conditions support snow hares, ptarmigans, and a herd of reindeer, with golden eagles and ospreys inhabiting the rocky crags and pine forests.

Lower down the slopes, a number of wildlife parks, farms and estates demonstrate highland land use and conservation, with herds of shaggy cattle and even bison, wild boar and wolves. In summer, walking, camping, watersports and mountain biking are the main outdoor activities. In winter, you can visit one of the skiing and snowboarding resorts in the area, Aviemore or the Cairngorm Ski Area.

Summer Activities
In summer, the main activities around Aviemore are walking and water sports. Two centres offer sailing, windsurfing and canoeing including equipment rental and tuition. Loch Morlich Watersports Centre and Loch Insh Watersports Centre .

The area is also great for mountain biking. The Rothiemurchus Visitor Centre at Inverdruie has route maps, and you can rent bikes here from Bothy Bikes .

Winter Activities
Previously a sleepy village, Aviemore was first developed in the 1960’s. It is perhaps a little ugly in parts, due to a lack of consideration on the part of some developers and the trend of the time towards concrete based construction techniques, although a recent face lift has helped improve things. The Cairngorm Ski Area is a more recent development and as a result has paid more attention to the environmental sensitivity of the area and has limited its impact.

For skiers more used to the good visibility, bright sunshine and crisp deep snow of the Alps, skiing in a Scottish winter may come as a bit of a shock at first. You are most likely to be guaranteed snow in February and March, but there’s a chance of decent snow at any time between mid-November and April.
