The Tenement House

The Tenement House is an authentic 19th century Glasgow tenement house which has has survived almost unchanged for over a century. It was the home, for over fifty years, of Miss Agnes Toward, who came to live here in 1911. She was an ordinary lady who kept all sorts of things others would have thrown away.
As well as keeping the Victorian furniture which had belonged to her grandparents, she held on to old letters, household bills, recipes, wartime leaflets, newspaper cuttings and even old pots of jam.
One of the first things you notice upon entering is the hiss and smell of the gas lighting which has been restored - Miss Toward only had electricity installed in 1960.
You can still see the typical tenement kitchen with its Victorian cast iron kitchen range and coalbunker, the traditional recess bed and an original fitted bathroom from 1892, which was considered luxurious by the standards of the day.
