The Old Town and the Royal Mile

Edinburgh has two distinct areas, the Old Town, dominated by the medieval fortress of Edinburgh Castle, and the neoclassical New Town, whose development from the 18th century onwards had a far-reaching influence on European urban planning.

Edinburgh's Old Town is one of the premier tourist images in the world, with an unforgetable skyline running from the Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The Old Town provides a huge variety of shops, with Galleries, Antique Shops, Crafts, Jewellery, Textiles, Cameras and Electrical Goods, Camping Equipment and many restaurants and bars.
The Royal Mile links the castle to Holyrood, and is divided into four separate streets - Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate. From these, branching out in a herringbone pattern, are a series of tightly packed closes and steep lanes entered via archways know as 'pends.'
This is one of the Edinburgh's most evocative areas, that rewards a bit of detailed exploration!
