Marble Arch Caves

The Marble Arch Caves in Western Fermanagh are a spectacular and memorable addition to a visit of this south western corner of Northern Ireland. Formed by water seeping through the soft and porous limestone over tens of thousands of years, theses caves are part of a large underground network, most of which are only accessible to expert potholers.

Marble Arch Caves are accessible to anyone though. The tour lasts about and hour and a quarter and begins with a boat journey along a subterranean river, then through brilliantly lit calcite walled chambers dripping with stalactites and fragile mineral veils. Take walking shoes and spare warm clothing – the temperature can drop significantly underground. Tours of the caves are held daily from mid March to September. It’s best to check in advance as tours are sometimes booked out by parties, or may even be cancelled in very wet weather due to flooding. On your approach to the caves, you’ll travel along the Marlbank Scenic Loop, with great views of Lower Lough Macnean and fields with naturally occurring formations of Limestone Flagstones.

The Legnabrocky Trail starts almost opposite the entrance to the caves, and runs through peatland and rugged limestone countryside to the slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain – a hard 6 or 7 hours walk to the summit. Come properly equipped if you want to try this walk and check the weather beforehand. Part of the Marble Arch Caves centre describes how the mountain park’s damaged peatland and bogland habitats are now being restored.
