Top 10 ten places to visit in North West England – The Lake District
Wast Water and Wasdale Head

If you want to get away from the busier areas of Cumbria, then head out west to Wast Water, one of the Lake District’s more isolated and romantic lakes.
The most dramatic route is via a minor road that runs over the 393 metre Hardknott Pass, although this shouldn’t be attempted in icy weather. The smoother A 595 coast road is an easier option.
At 80 metres (260ft) Wast Water is England’s deepest lake and is close to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, at 978 metres (3 210 ft) high.
Along its eastern flank, sheer walls of scree loom upwards towards the sky, their forms reflected in the inky blackness of the water.
The approach to the lake takes you through a series of small settlements, before the road begins to descend giving a view of the lake from above. Your first experience of driving or walking alongside its shores is a sense of awe and isolation imbued by the drama of the surrounding landscape.
The road ends at Wasdale Head, with the grand view of Great Gable, and the huge forms of Scafell and Scafell Pike looming behind. A small church here commemorates fallen climbers.
Wasdale Head is also home to the excellent Wasdale Head Inn serving huge four course meals and hearty breakfasts, a National Trust Campsite, and the Lingmell House B&B.
For walkers who don’t wish to tackle the mountains, there are a number of gentler trails amongst the lower slopes and along the banks of Wast Water.
Alternatively you may prefer to sit outside with a drink and take in the scenery. The area is also excellent for photographers and artists.
If you are intending to explore, make sure you are properly prepared and equipped, and check the weather beforehand.
