Stonyhurst College

During your tour you will see how today's pupils live, work and play and learn about Stonyhurst life as it used to be. Your guide will show you the chapels and historic rooms; the college library; the Elizabethan Great Hall, hung with the portraits of the 7 Stonyhurst VCs and the table where Oliver Cromwell slept before the Battle of Preston.

You can enjoy the grounds and gardens at your leisure; visit the Dark Walk which provided Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with his inspiration for Sir Henry Baskerville's murder; and take in the stunning views towards Pendle across the Ribble Valley.

Did you know that the Ribble Valley area around Stonyhurst is thought to be the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Middle Earth', in the Lord of the Rings. 'Tolkien Trail' tours are now on offer for fans. You can see why this area might have inspired Tolkien - it's stunning moorland with striking and spectacular scenery. This is the land of dinky villages, great ale pubs, and speciality shopping, particularly in places like market town Clitheroe.

Castles, Abbeys, moorland and woodland all make for a heritage rich area of outstanding beauty Ribble Valley
