Alnwick Castle and Gardens

Harry Potter fans may recognise Alnwick Castle as “Hogwarts School” – it was used as a location in the first two films.

The castle dominates the appealing market town of Alnwick, with its cobbled streets and Georgian houses, centred on the old cross in Market Place, site of weekly markets (Thursdays and Saturdays) since the thirteenth century, and a farmers market on the last Friday of each month. The best time to visit is during the week long Alnwick Fair, a medieval re-enactment which starts on the last Sunday in June.

Alnwick Garden, near the castle is an attraction in its own right, an innovative and relatively recent addition and definite crowd puller. At its centre is the Grand Cascade, a computerized fountain that shoots water jets in a synchronised display. Other features include the Poison Garden – filled with the world’s deadliest plants, and a bamboo labyrinth maze.

Perhaps the most popular of all is the Treehouse – a network of rope bridges and covered structures integrated into the canopy of the deciduous trees and a  popular spot to enjoy a meal from the excellent Garden Café. This is also open for dinner,  Thursday to Saturday from 6 pm.
