2. Ashridge Estate

Top 10 ten - Hertfordshire

Ashridge Estate

Ashridge Estate is a lovely area of open countryside and woodland on the edge of the Chiltern Hills with a rich variety of bird and wildlife, including fallow deer and red kite.
A network of footpaths and bridleways criss-crosses the estate, where ancient woodlands display carpets of bluebells in spring and spectacular colours in autumn.
See splendid panoramas of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire from the Ivinghoe Beacon - the 250 metre high site of an Iron Age hill fort.
The Duke of Bridgewater Monument provides a focal point for the estate. Built in 1832 to commemorate the third Duke of Bridgewater, a pioneer of 18th century canal building, it is the site of a visitor centre, cafe, shop and car parking.
