Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo covers 110 acres, with new projects and attractions opening all the time. Although slightly smaller than London Zoo, it feels more spacious and relaxed.
There are over 500 species of animals here, with favourites such as elephants, giraffes, chimps, tigers and sea-lions, as well as otters, cranes and smaller creatures including fish and reptiles. Animals are grouped by region in large paddocks and can be viewed from a maze of pathways, the monorail or the water bus. The zoo has had notable success with special conservation projects, not only here but by providing funding and support to research to field studies abroad. The innovative ethos is carried through to the design and construction of the animal’s environments and the visitor experience as a whole. The Rainforest Habitat, the Bat Cave, and the Chimpanzee Forest which has the biggest climbing frame in the country are good examples of this, and kids will also be able to enjoy some of the other activities on offer like the Animal Discovery Centre, face painting and the “growl zone.” Zoos are hungry work, so there is a choice of four different cafes and restaurants, The Ark Restaurant, Café Tsavo, Oakfield House Tearoom and Restaurant and The Acorn Bar.
