Duxford Imperial War Museum
As well as hosting some major air shows every year, Duxford, near Cambridge, is home to Europe’s largest collection of military aircraft. The two main aircraft displays are the British Aircraft Collection, and the American Air Museum, housed in an impressive building designed by Sir Norman Foster.
The British collection covers military and civilian aircraft dating from WWI to Concorde, and includes crowd pullers like the Supermarine Spitfire and Lancaster Bomber. The American collection features the largest collection of American combat aircraft outside the United States, including the P-51 Mustang and the huge B-52 Stratofortress. AirSpace, a brand new multi-million pound addition to the existing aircraft collections is under construction, an interactive and educational display of Britain’s aviation heritage, and a look into the future. The first phase has been completed and is open to the public, with the second phase due for completion in July 2007. Other displays include the Land Warfare Hall, which shows vehicles and wartime reconstructions, and the Naval Collection, which includes British Naval aircraft and an “X-type” midget submarine that was involved in the attack on the German Battleship “Turpitz.” The Normandy Experience is entered via the open doors of a beach landing craft. Photographs, military vehicles, weapons, equipment and audio visual displays tell the story of the Normandy invasion and subsequent battles. Other exhibits at this very large site include The Battle of Britain Exhibition, Monty, and The Forgotten War Exhibition, a history of the WWII Burma campaign. Address:
